At last, after the repositioning of wayside hawkers, the Thyagaraya Road stretches from Panagal Park to Anna Salai-Tenampet junction looks like a broad and wide six-lane stretch.
But for long years, Thyagaraya Road remained
congested as the vendors had conquered most part of the road, predominantly the
Pondy Bazaar road.
Presently, Chennai Corporation has
leaded its helping hand with the shopping complex, as the vendors can relocate
their shops. All the shops on the first floor will remain open on Sunday. Very
few shops will be functioning on the other floors.
Hawkers in the complex claimed that
some shops have been sub-let. On the other hand, Mohammed Hakim, secretary of
Rajiv Gandhi Footpath Shops Association which signifies the roadside shops on
Usman Road, states all shops approved to them have been taken.
All vendors who have been allotted
space will relocate to the shopping complex within two months and the rest of
the hawkers must loom the government and seek their move, says Mr. Hakim.
The T. Nagar Residents’ Welfare Association members have been even more worried, as the expansion of road for the Usman road flyover can bring in more roadside shops.
