With the severity of water shortage increasing in Chennai city & suburbs, digging of new bore-wells and repairing/deepening of existing bore-wells have been taken up in full swing.
Metrowater is being distributed from the reservoirs at Poondi, Puzhal, Cholavaram, and Chembarambakkam. The total capacity of these 4 reservoirs is 11,057 million Cubic Feet. Presently, there is only 3459 million cubic feet of water. Last year, on this same date, 4,739 million cubic feet of water was available.
With the failure of the monsoon, groundwater plate level has gone down. Chennai city depends on water from Krishna River (in Andhra Pradesh) through the opening of the Kandaleru dam.
With the dwindling water level in the reservoirs, water is being supplied only on alternate days. Spme areas get water only once a week. Public depend on the bore-well water. Some of the bore-wells have dried up.
Hence the deepenening of bore-wells has been taken up in full swing. The trend of buying water usually starts in March or April. This year, it has started by February itself.
