Power shut-downs to stop after May

Power shut-downs to stop after May – TAGEDCO depends on restoration of power generation from wind power stations.

TANGEDCO officials have informed that power shut-downs will stop from May. There might power-cuts of 2 hours in some parts of Chennai city in a rotational basis, only if required.

Tamil Nadu has been facing acute power shortage for the last several years. Power-cut for several hours is imposed to counter this shortage. This is daily 2 hours in Chennai city and daily 5 hours in other districts. Whenever there is enough power generation, power-cuts are not enforced.

During the last month, power generation worsened leading to more power-cuts. With the advent of summer, the demand also has increased. Further, there were break-downs in thermal power stations and windmill power stations. Currently, wind power generation stands at 500 MW.

However, the officials are confident that the situation will improve in May with the restoration of wind power stations of around 7200 MW. This is because the southwest monsoon begins in May and at least 2500 MW of power is expected from the wind power sources.

It is worth noting that the daily requirement of power in Tamil Nadu is 12,500 MW and currently 11,500 MW is available. This shortfall of 1000 MW can be easily available from May with the expected restoration of wind power. Hence, it is expected that there will be no power-cuts from May.
