Ingredients
- Vazhai poo (Banana Flower cleaned) 1 cup
- Channa Dal (Kadala Parupu) 1 cup
- Red Chilli 2 nos
- Rice Flour 1 spoon (Optional)
- Onion 1 nos
- Fennel Seeds 1 spoon
- Ginger a small piece
- Curry leaves a few
- Coriander Leaves a few
- Salt To taste
- Cooking Oil for deep fry
Method of Preparation
- Soak channa dal in water for an hour before preparation of vada.
- Clean Vazhai poo thoroughly and chop it in to small pieces. Add 1 spoon of curd to a bowl of water immerse the chopped banana flower in it.
- Drain water from channa dal and grind it in a mixer along with ginger (remove its skin off) and red chilli, salt, fennel seeds to a coarse paste without adding water.
- Then transfer it in a mixing bowl and add chopped Vazhai poo, onion, curry leaves and coriander leaves and mix well.
- Drain water completely from banana flower and then add it for mixing.
- If the dough is tight enough for preparing vada, then leave it.
- If the dough is little bit light and watery, then add 1 spoon of rice flour into it. Also rice flour will grant a crispy flavour to the vada.
- Then make small balls from the dough.
- Spread each ball using hand either on a plastic sheet or banana leaf greased with the oil.
- Then deep fry it, in a tawa of cooking oil. Always keep the stove in low flame, while deep frying the vada.
- Hot Vazhai Poo Vada is ready to serve!
Tips:
- Be cautious while buying the banana flower from shop: see the colour of the red petals of banana flower; if it is in dark maroon colour then it will taste good.
- Instead of red chilli, you can very well use green chilli also.
- Instead of directly adding the chopped banana flower into the flour, it is always better to grind the banana flower in a mixer for about two rounds (to a coarse particles) and add it to the channa dal flour.
- While grinding the dough for channa dal vada, it should be always a coarse state, conversely the Urad dal vada should be in fine paste.
