Who said osteoporosis affects women only and men need not worry about this issue at all?

The news is men also could be affected by this osteoporosis and the rate at which bone lost takes place in men in their 50s is lower when compared to women. The main reason is women go through menopause at that age whereas men do not.

Osteoporosis is defined as a disease where increased weakness of bones increases the risk of broken bones. It is common to see people with this disease having broken bones in hip, forearms, vertebrae in spine etc.

It is said that men suffers from this osteoporosis issue because of their lifestyle plus habits and not many men could recognise this problem in them before they break their bones.

These below mentioned factors cause osteoporosis in men and they must not ignore these

Age - It is now clear that age is the biggest factor that causes this osteoporosis issue in men. Men lose their bone density at the rate of 0.5 to 1 % once when men touch 50 years of age. The body would not be able to rebuild the bones at the same rate as before the age of 50.

Lack of calcium and vitamin D - Calcium and vitamin D are very essential in the bone growth is well known. It must be noted that vitamin D helps in food absorption and calcium helps in building stronger bones in us. Calcium is got from dairy and milk and vitamin D could be got from the exposure to the sun. Lack of calcium and vitamin D results in reduced bone strength and osteoporosis.

Lack of exercise - This is also one important factor that causes osteoporosis in men. Lack of exercise could make the bones weak and get fractured easily. Jogging or running is good and must be done atleast 30 minutes every day.

Drinking excess alcohol - Increase in bone loss is also possible by more alcohol intake by men. Moreover drinking could also damage the liver. So excessive drinking must be avoided.

Smoking - Apart from causing many health issues this smoking could also lead to thinning of the bones in men. Those who smoke are physically less active when compared to non-smokers and it affect the bones directly.

Intake of certain medicines - Bone loss in men could also be due to medicines that are used to treat depression, diabetes, cancer, rheumatoid arthritis etc. So be careful.
