In order to alleviate the difficulties encountered while carrying the original certificates such as the Driving Licence, etc., the Central Ministry of Transport has decided to allow the digital formats of these requisite documents.

There are several difficulties encountered by the vehicle owners when they always need to carry the original documents while driving. The vehicle owners had strongly appealed regarding this to the central ministry of transportation. Subsequently, it is all set to get permission to keep the digital formats of all requisite documents while driving throughout the country.

The officials concerned explained in this regard that the number and the frequency of accidents are more in the state of Tamil Nadu. In order to block the drivers responsible for the accidents and the vehicles, the Chennai High Court had ordered that all original documents including the Driving Licence must be available while driving.

In this situation, the central vehicle owners’ associations had put up an appeal that permission must be given to keep the copies of the documents such as the driving licence, insurance, pollution-related document, and vehicle ownership. When reviewing this appeal, the Central Ministry of transport has decided to allow the digital formats of the above documents to be kept as mandatory while driving.

In order to arrive at a clear-cut decision, the central ministry of transportation had formed a review committee. The committee’s recommendations:

In an App or website exclusive to the vehicle owners, the details of the digital formats of the original documents may be allowed to be kept.

However, in order to ensure the safety of these data, secret codes must be given to access them, and also, the documents must be clear enough for the police to check and verify whether they are indeed the originals.

Further, most accidents occur because of the vehicles carrying construction items/equipment. In order to reduce/prevent this, it must be made mandatory to transport the construction items.equipment only in closed heavy vehicles. In case if difficulties are encountered, the goods may be covered with tarpaulin.

GPS equipment must be installed in all vehicles with national permission. The sides and the back portion of the vehicles must be pasted with glistening strips.

Also, the committee has made certain other recommendations considering the time-delays and difficulties/hardships encountered while getting the vehicle fitness certificates. Accordingly, for vehicles less than 8 years old, the fitness certificate has to be taken only once in 2 years.

All these above recommendations will simplify and ease the tasks of the vehicle owners.
