Ponnanganni keerai masiyal (Dwarf Copper Leaf Recipe)
Ingredients
- Ponnanganni keerai - 2 cups
- Toor dal / Thuvaram paruppu - 50 grm
- Onion - 1
- Tomato - 1
- Garlic - 5 cloves
- Red chilli / Green chilli - 3
- Turmeric Powder - ½ tsp
- Sambar powder (Red chilli & Dhania powder) - 1 tbsp
- Tamarind Extract - 2 tbsp
- Salt - as needed
- Oil - 2 tbsp
- Mustard seeds - ½ tsp
- Cumin seeds - ¼ tsp
- Red chilli - 1
- Asafoetida – a pinch
Method:
- Collect the leaves from the stem, wash thoroughly in water.
- Soak Toor dal with water for about half an hour and pressure cook it along with turmeric powder for about 2 whistles.
- Heat a thick bottomed pan with a spoon of oil and add splinted green chilli / red chilli, minced garlic and chopped onion. Once it turns golden brown, add chopped tomato. Sauté well until the tomato shrinks and the raw smell leaves.
- Add Salt and Sambar powder to them.
- Mix well and pour a cup of water to them.
- When it starts to boil, add chopped keerai and cook for few minutes.
- Don’t cover with a plate.
- Once the keerai gets boiled well, add the already cooked Toor dal and the tamarind extract to it. Mix well.
- When it starts to boil turn off the stove.
- Let it cool for about 5 minutes and churn it in a mud pot with a “maththu”
- Heat a pan with a spoon of oil and add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, asafoetida, and splinted red chilli for tempering and add it on top of the keerai.
- Serve PonnanganniKeerai masiyal with Rice.
