Who said only in the peak summer there would be severe water scarcity?

The fact is summer hasn’t started yet but the news is many suburban residential areas in Chennai are reeling under a severe water shortage. The areas also include those that were recently included under the limits of GCC. Pattabiram in western part of Chennai is an important residential locality and in this place more than 70 percent of the residents are dependent on the bore wells.

Near Pattabiram is located Ambattur with many residential homes plus many industries etc. In Ambattur also the residents have not got metro water connection for more than 10 years after the area came under the corporation limits. This has been confirmed by Mr. T. Sadagopan who is the TN Progressive Consumer Center president. It was pointed out that even those persons who pay taxes regularly and have water connections, the supply of water has been irregular.

As many as 648 bore wells had been sunk by the municipality in Avadi to augment the present 300 hand pumps. This was also confirmed by an official belonging to MAWS or Municipal Administration and Water Supply. He then added that steps were taken to repair the faulty ones.

Mr. Sadagopan explained about how most bore wells that were sunk using the funds allocated for councillor have become inoperative or defunct inside 2 years of time. He threw light on how the municipal officials showed little interest in repairing them. The municipal officials were of the view that the required equipment had to be brought from Kancheepuram.

It is known that east and west Chromepet comes under the Pallavaram municipality. In these places also the condition is not great regarding water supply inspite of the presence of half a dozen lakes. The truth is these lakes have lots of sewage and hence residents of Chromepet were supplied water from the Palar River just twice in a month. This was confirmed by Mr. V. Santhanaman who is the president of Civic Welfare Associations of Pallavaram.  Mr. Santhanam later revealed that the municipal authorities have assured them regarding the supply of water through tankers.
