In TN, joint efforts have made road accident fatalities reduce by 24%

Road accidents result in death in most cases is known. The latest piece of information got is due to the joint efforts of the police personnel, health and transport officials, the fatalities in road accidents have dropped to 24.39%.

It is important to note that the efforts were recognized by Supreme Court appointed committee on the road safety that recently suggested that the other states follow TN initiatives. In the year 2017, high number of accident deaths took place in TN and it was really shocking. It was pointed out by the States Crime Record Bureau Statistics that out of total of 147,913 accidents that took place all over India in 2017 as many as 16,157 took place in TN. This amounts to 10.9% of faculties. In the year 2018, the number of deaths due to accidents came below and was 12,213.

It must be taken into account that the Director General of Police or DGP (Law and Order) Mr. Rajendran, DGP Traffic and Road Safety Cell, Mr. Karan Singha and special DGP, Mr. Vijaykumar etc have been involved in reviewing the road accident trend in the districts.

It was confirmed by a senior official that the evaluation of the performance of the officers across TN was carried out by the above mentioned top police officials and a structured view mechanism was formed with suggestion for improvement. A strong message was sent across the force. The important point is the emphasis of implementation of traffic rules strictly were communicated across the ranks.

As per the officers it is clear that a crackdown on the offences such as speeding, drunk driving, carrying passengers in goods carriers as well as strict implementation of compulsory helmets and seat belt rules played a great part in the reduction of fatalities.

Instead of operating in silos, a comprehensive systems approach to transportation safety was being pursued in TN. This was as per Mr. Venkatesh Balasubramanium of the engineering design department, IITM and adviser, Tamil Nadu Accident and Emergency Care Initiative OR TAEI. He finally spoke about how all the stakeholder departments worked together as a team towards a common objective.
