In Chennai, over 1000 gun license holders deposited their weapons with police

On 18th of April 2019, Lok Sabha elections would take place and preparations are going on is well known. It is now said that due to the upcoming elections, over 1000 license holders of firearms have deposited their weapons with the police. Till the elections gets over, the weapons would be kept in armoury.

Some time back the EC or Election Commission had announced the dates for elections and after that a special cell for election purpose was set up in the city police commissionerate for the purpose of monitoring closely the implementation of Model Code of Conduct. It is worthy to note that this also included handling over of licensed firearms.

The point to be noted is there are 2709 license holders across as many as 14 police of Chennai city police and the authorities have asked all the gun owners to deposit their firearms. As of now as many as 1096 persons have deposited their guns and still as many as 856 persons have to deposit their guns. This was as per the statement given by a senior police official.

Important information is these deposited weapons would be kept safe in the armory and they would be given back to the respective owners once the elections get completed. As many as 750 persons have been exempted.

The police officials have confirmed that Ex-service personnel working in the banks, security guards who are involved in escorting the vehicles carrying money to banks and ATMs etc would be exempted from depositing their guns.
