TN Government increases the eligibility marks for SC/ST students for engineering course admission

The Tamil Nadu State government Department of Higher Education has changed the minimum qualifying marks for eligibility to join engineering courses B.E. or B. Tech. As per the change, the minimum qualifying marks for the open community candidates and most backward category students have been reduced. At the same time, the minimum qualifying marks for the candidates from SC/ST category has been increased.

Thus, the qualifying marks to be considered for engineering course admission couselling has been changed. Until now, the open community candidates required more than 50%, backward community category, a minimum of 45%, the most backward and backward categories required 40%, and the Scheduled Class/Scheduled Tribe category required a minimum o 35%.

In order to bring this system to a close, n a Government Order released by the Secretary of the Department of Higher Education, Mangat Ram Sharma, it is mentioned:

As per the All India Technology Council, the minimum marks required for the students pursuing engineering courses for admissions during the coming academic year are being changed. For the scheduled Class and Scheduled Tribe category candidates, the minimum qualifying marks for counselling to join engineering courses has been increased from 35% to 40%/

However, for the open community category candidates, the minimum qualifying marks for counselling has been reduced from 50% to 45% and for all others to 40%.

As per the recommendations by the All India Technical Education Council, the admission/counselling for the students applying to join engineering courses will be as per above revised condition for the academic year 2019-20.

Subsequently, the academicians have observed that there would be a considerable reduction in the number of students from the Scheduled Class/Scheduled Tribe category.
