The increased toll-gate charges were rendered effective at midnight at the start of 20th April (today).
The Central department of the National Highways has announced that the toll-gate charges have been revised upwards by 5% to 12%.
There a re more than48 toll-gates in Tamil adu.
As perthe procedure, the toll-gate charges are revised up wards on a rotaitional basis during the months of September and April on an individual basis.
With the present lockdown conditions, the industries have folded up ad not functioning. Hence, people from various sectors have been insisting that the toll-gate charges must be exempted under these conditions.
In this scenario, at the 26 tollgates located in Tamil Nadu including Salem-Ulundhurpettai-Mettuppatti, Dindivanam-Ulundhurpettai, Nallur-Chennai, and Tirchy-Dindigul, the revised charges became effective at the stroke of the midnight with the dawn for 20th April(Monday).
This decision has sent severe shock-waves among the public as well as the lorry-owners.
When enquiring about this issue to the The officials of the Central Department of National Highways, they responded:
“As a regular procedure, the toll-gate charges are revised upwards every year during the 1st day of the months of April and September on a rotational basis. Because of the present lockdown situation, the revised toll-gate charges could not be implemented on 1st April this year.
In this situation, the toll-gates resume functioning from 20th April (Monday, today) In this regard, as per the orders of the national Highways Commission, we have revised the toll-gate charges upwards in Tamil Nadu from the midnight of 19th April. This upward revision of toll-gate charges will be from 5% to 12% depending on the category of the tollgates and type of the vehicles.
As lockdown is under imposition, there will not be any traffic congestion in the toll-gates. So, only a few paths will be functioning in each toll-gate!”
