Commuters using R.K. Salai, Tirumayilai, and Mandaveli where the Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) for Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) are operating, are experiencing diversions impacting their daily travel.
Traffic has been diverted at these locations since January 7, 2024, after obtaining necessary traffic permissions. However, concerns have arisen among road users regarding issues such as abandoned vehicles, encroachments on diversion roads and other inner routes, and the need for additional traffic management.
CMRL is actively working with Greater Chennai Corporation and the Police to promptly address the removal of abandoned vehicles and encroachments at diversion sites. To enhance traffic management, additional Traffic Marshalls will be deployed at all junctions and diversion points in collaboration with Traffic Police.
In response to public concerns, CMRL is coordinating with Traffic Police to increase personnel deployment for efficient enforcement of one-way traffic. Furthermore, discussions are underway with the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) to potentially introduce Mini buses, aiming to alleviate public inconvenience during this period of diversions.
As part of the ongoing efforts, CMRL has initiated road repair works to ensure the good condition of roads affected by the diversions. The road repair activities are anticipated to conclude within a week`s time. Commuters are encouraged to stay updated on these developments and plan their routes accordingly.
