A food processing research and training institute at the Dryland Agriculture Research Station at Chettinad in Sivagangai district is being set up by the Tamilnadu Government. this would form part of the state`s initiatives in setting up modern godowns to store food grains. The food grains could be preserved for a longer duration only when they are processed. There is a growing need for processed food due to urbanization, change in lifestyle and rise in per capita income.
Training programmes has been designed to cater to farmers, self-help groups, entrepreneurs and school dropouts. Experts will offer training to handle food and food processing machines, besides manufacturing of value-added food products.
