CBSE schools to start enrolling students from February 15

CBSE director D T Sudharsan Rao has asked the Chennai city schools affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education to start enrolling students from February 15 next year.

The Directorate of Matriculation Schools, which is also in charge of implementing the Right to Education (RTE) Act in Tamil Nadu, had earlier directed all schools in the state, including CBSE and ICSE institutions, to begin admissions only in April.

This puts CBSE schools in a spot because they begin their academic year early, starting classes in April, taking a break in May and reopening in June.

The board will also ensure that schools keep 25% of their seats vacant for admissions under the RTE Act. Rao said in his letter that “schools will be held accountable” in case they violate the rules to provide seats under the RTE Act.

However, matriculation schools will have a problem if CBSE schools finish admissions and absorb most of the students before they begin the process.
