Health Minister C. Vijaya Baskar will commission a new procedure for the students of diploma nursing courses at the Madras Medical College from today. Under this new procedure students of diploma nursing courses will, henceforth, be issued computer-generated hall tickets, mark sheets and completion certificates. The move will benefit around 40,000 students pursuing courses conducted by various nursing colleges in the State.
Until now, all official documents such as hall tickets, mark sheets and diplomas were typed and given to the students. Photos were pasted on hall tickets and there was always the chance of misuse.
Students who apply for higher studies to institutions in other countries are expected to produce documentary evidence of their qualifications. With typed mark sheets, the authenticity of the course was in question. Hence, computerisation was adopted.
Dr. Kanagasabai, Medical Director said, “The quality of certificates is also important to ensure credibility. Those who undergo degree courses in nursing receive their mark sheets and certificates through the Dr. MGR Medical University. Diploma students study for three and half years, but their course loses validation for want of standardised procedures. We decided to do away with the disparity and ensure that students had no problem while applying to foreign universities.”
Nursing courses are conducted by 213 private institutions and 23 government-run colleges. The Tamil Nadu Nursing Council, the registering body for nurses, donated Rs. 10 lakh towards development of software and the private nursing school management association provided hardware worth Rs. 5 lakh.
