Early curing of paediatric glaucoma possible now

Good news for those parents who are upset due to their babies diagnosed with glaucoma. It is now said that paediatric glaucoma can be cured in those babies that are within a year.

It is known that 11th March to 17th March is World Glaucoma Awareness Week and eye doctors stressed the importance of early diagnosis of glaucoma in the babies.

Incorrect development of eyes fluid flow system before birth causes paediatric glaucoma and it leads to enlarged eyes plus cloudiness of the cornea and photosensitivity problems etc.

It is worthy to mention here that glaucoma is a disorder in the eye and does not show symptoms. Glaucoma causes rise in the fluid pressure inside the eye and results in issues such as headache, pain in the eyes plus other issues like vomiting sensation, appearance of rainbow coloured circles around bright light etc. This glaucoma is usually present in the people above the age of 40 but could also be present in babies from birth.

Dr. Karpagavalli an ophthalmologist, Dr Agarwal Eye Hospital, shared her thoughts regarding this glaucoma and said diagnosis is tough and it could be diagnosed only when it progresses and destroys the central vision.

She also highlighted that half the people with glaucoma remain undiagnosed and when diagnosed 50 percent have advanced glaucoma. She further threw light on how regular screening of at-risk people to detect and treat glaucoma is very important.

This popular eye doctor further spoke about how in the paediatrics treatment for glaucoma could begin with medical management with eye medications depending on the intensity of glaucoma. Laser plus surgical treatment of this glaucoma is possible
