A severe winter can be quite harmful to the lips.
The main features, cold air, the chilling wind, and the persevering dry and heated air combine well together to cause maximum harm to the lips! Further, whenever there is an outing during the winter, people take to cover most parts but not the lips!
All of us are aware that the skin of the lips is quite unique and different from the other skin. It dries 10 times faster than the other body skin! This fact will give you an idea of how important it is to protect your lip-skin during winter.
It is always better to avoid keeping licking the lips as it makes it even drier!
It is best to use an ointment-based lip balm. Its moisture content helps to heal cracks and splits on the lip-skin. Also, use sunscreen as the sun is quite present though not as intense in the winter. An important point to note is that it is better not to use lip-balms which contain camphor, eucalyptus or menthol – all of which tend to dry the lips! Again, it is better to avoid brushing the lips especially when they flaky or peeling.
Lip cracks are to be treated immediately. If not, they might become more harmful – leading to infection or cold sore!
Apply lip-balm before going to bed every night. Note that the habit of open-mouth sleeping can dry the lips quite quickly.
Treat cracks right away. If you let them go, they can become worse and possibly get infected or lead to a cold sore.
At night, apply lip balm before you go to bed. Many people sleep with their mouths open. Eight hours of breathing in and out through your mouth can dry your lips. Consider using a humidifier for that extra moisture.
