How many of us know what a migraine is?
Migraine is nothing but primary headache disorder and is characterised by the headaches that occur again and again. These headaches may vary from being moderate to severe. Migraines create huge amount of discomfort for the person. There are few symptoms of migraines and these are severe pain in the head, vomiting, nausea, sensitivity to light etc. Pain from migraines could be there for hours to days. It is said that both environmental as well as genetic factors are responsible for migraines in us. It is important to mention that before puberty, this migraine affects the boys more than the girls and the risk of migraines reduces during pregnancy. There are few foods that could increase the migraines in us. Hence it is important to avoid consuming these foods.
Foods that could trigger migraines in us and to be avoided are
Caffeine intake must be avoided:
When a person is suffering from migraine then that person must avoid consumption of caffeine. It is revealed that caffeine act on certain receptors in the brain that are associated with migraines. Foods like coffee, tea etc have caffeine in them and must be avoided.
Avoid alcohol:
Inspite knowing that alcohol intake could lead to many health issues many people still consume alcohol. The presence of tannins and flavonoids in alcohol could increase the migraine in us. Hence it would be superb to avoid alcohol to be free from migraine attacks. Moreover alcohol intake could lead to dehydration in us and this is also a reason for migraines etc
Avoid intake of processed meats:
The presence of sodium nitrate in processed meats leads to changes in brain chemistry. Finally migraines are caused in us. Hence it is important to avoid these processed meats.
Packed foods having artificial sweeteners to be avoided:
It is important that we must not consume packed foods like diet sodas, breakfast cereals, puddings etc as these foods have artificial sweeteners like aspartame in them. This could create migraines in us.
Say no to chocolates:
Most of us eat chocolates without knowing the fact that these chocolates would cause migraines in us. The presence of caffeine and beta-phenylethylamine in chocolates could trigger migraines in few persons.
Do not eat foods having MSG:
MSG or monosodium glutamate is a food additive present in certain foods. The foods having MSG must not be consumed as it could trigger migraines in us. Examples of foods having MSG are potato chips, cold cuts, frozen dinners, gravies, salty flavoured snacks etc.
Avoid intake of aged cheeses:
This is also very important food that must be avoided by us to be free from migraines. The tyramine present in aged cheeses could trigger migraines. If the cheese is old then it would have more tyramine content in it.
Treatment for migraine:
There are few ways by which migraines in us could be treated and they are acupressure process, application of peppermint oil, applying lavender oil, consuming magnesisium rich foods like almonds, sesame seeds etc. Yoga could be done to avoid or to reduce migraines.
