The point is the circadian clock operates inside the body and its organs as an intrinsic time keeping machinery to preserve homeostasis in response to the changing environment. In the peripheral tissues, the food was known to influence the circadian clock. It is brought out that till now there is no clarity on how the lack of food influences the clock function and how it finally affects the body.
Lead author Paolo Sassone-Corsi spoke about how fasting influences the circadian clock and fasting driven cellular responses which work together to achieve fasting specific temporal gene regulation. He then explained how skeletal muscle appears to be twice as responsive to fasting as the liver.
It was pointed out by the researchers that fasting could essentially reprogram a variety of cellular responses and hence optimum fasting in a timed manner is a strategy to positively affect the cellular functions. In the end overall health is benefitted and protection against ageing associated diseases would be got.
