How many of us know that the trendiest weight loss that was searched in 2019 was intermittent fasting?
This intermittent fasting is an eating plan that switches between fasting and eating on a regular schedule. It is the oldest and most powerful dietary intervention. How we eat and not what we eat is intermittent fasting.
Information is intermittent fasting was featured in a review article in the New England Journal of Medicine. There are many health benefits which we could get by this intermittent fasting and these are weight loss, reversal of type-1 diabetes etc but the truth is it should be done properly.
Difference between fasting and starvation:
Involuntary absence of food for a long time is termed as starvation whereas voluntary avoidance of food for long periods of time (due to spiritual, health reasons etc) is called fasting. Fact is starvation could be disastrous and could lead to death also. Starvation is uncontrolled but fasting is controlled by the person.
It is important to note that the intermittent fasting is not unusual but is a part of everyday normal life.
Working process of intermittent fasting:
It is important to note that when we consume food more food is ingested than can immediately be used. For later use, some of this energy must be stored away. In the storage of energy, insulin hormone plays an important role. Truth is when we consume food the insulin level in us increases and the excess energy is stored in 2 separate ways. Carbohydrate gets broken into individual sugar units and it could be linked into a long chain to form glycogen. This glycogen is then stored in the muscle or liver.
The less storage space available for the carbohydrates makes the liver turn excess glucose to fat. It must be noted that some of the newly created fat is stored in the liver but most of the fats is exported to other fat deposits in the body. In our bodies, 2 complimentary food energy storage systems are present. One is easily accessible but having limited storage space and the other one is less easily accessible but with unlimited storage space.
