Many people these days get affected with cardiovascular diseases etc and find their lives difficult.
It has been confirmed now by the latest study that eating foods rich in vitamin k could lower the risk of atherosclerosis based cardiovascular diseases. The study has been published in the Journal of the American Heart Association. It is learnt that the research study took place for a massive period of 23 years and it had more than 50000 people taking part in the Danish Diet, Cancer and Health study.
Point is that the researchers investigated whether people who consumed more foods with vitamin K had a lower risk of cardiovascular disease related to atherosclerosis or plaque build-up in the arteries. Vitamin K1 and vitamin K2 are 2 types of vitamin K. Green leafy veggies and vegetable oils have vitamin K1 and animal products like meat, eggs etc have vitamin K2.
The researchers have found from the study that those who consumed the highest amounts of vitamin K1 were 21% less likely to be hospitalised with cardiovascular disease related to atherosclerosis. The risk of getting hospitalised for vitamin K2 was less than 14%. For all types of heart disease related to atherosclerosis, this lower risk was observed.
According to Dr. Nicola Bondonno, ECU researcher and senior author it was confirmed that eating more foods rich in vitamin K would give protection against atherosclerosis and subsequent cardiovascular disease. The senior author later mentioned that the current dietary guidelines for intake of vitamin K were based on the amount of vitamin k1 that a person must have for their blood coagulation. Point is that there is growing evidence about intakes of vitamin K above the present guidelines that could give further protection against the development of other diseases like atherosclerosis etc. By consuming vitamin K, there would not be any build-up of calcium in the major arteries of the body resulting in vascular calcification.
Information gathered is that the role of vitamin K in cardiovascular health and in the vascular calcification is an important area of research. This was according to the first author of the research study, Dr. Jamie Bellinge belonging to University of Western Australia. He concluded that the latest findings have revealed the important effect THAT vitamin K has got on the deadly disease. Healthy diet importance in preventing the disease has been reinforced. It must be noted that at present there is less data available on the vitamin K2 content of foods.
