As an organ present in the female reproductive system, ovary is responsible for the production of ovum is well known. Inside this ovary there is a fluid filled sac and this is ovarian cyst. It is said that majority of cysts do not cause any harm to the women. When these cysts break open then severe pain results. It must be noted that these ovaries are often neglected by the women. Every month most women of reproductive age develop small cysts. In about 8% of women, large cysts are formed before menopause.

These below mentioned facts about ovarian cysts are important and a woman must know about these facts.

What is an ovarian cyst?

Ranging from millimetres to more than 5 centimetres, ovarian cysts are small sacs filled with fluids and these sacs form on the ovaries. Ovaries are main source of female hormones and these hormones play an important role in the development of body shape, body hairs etc in females. So it is essential to know about the importance of the ovaries.

Formation of ovarian cysts:

Whenever a woman ovulates then a small cell or follicles form in the ovaries. When the egg is mature and ready to be fertilized this breaks. If it doesn’t break open then fluid inside the cyst could form cyst on the ovary. This type is called as follicle cyst. Another type of cyst called as corpus luteum cyst is also developed sometimes. This is an ovarian cyst that forms after the rupture of follicle and egg is released. Small cysts do not create issue and they could pass in few weeks of time whereas bigger cysts create issues.

Symptoms of ovarian cysts:

There are many symptoms associated with ovarian cyst and they are

Abdominal bloating or swelling, painful bowel movements, painful intercourse, pain in lower back or thighs, nausea and vomiting etc. There are also few severe symptoms of ovarian cyst and they are severe pelvic pain, fever, dizziness etc.

Causes for ovarian cysts:

The various reasons or causes for this ovarian cyst are endometriosis, hormonal imbalance in pregnancy, pelvic infections. It must be noted that functional cyst could be cured without any medication or surgery. Sometimes pills are used to ovulate and this could create many health issues in women.

Could ovarian cyst lead to cancer later?

Most women would be confused regarding whether ovarian cyst could result in cancer or not. The news is there is slightest chance of ovarian cyst becoming cancer. It is said that those women who are going through menopause are more prone to ovarian cancer. Ultrasound must be carried out to get a clear picture as it could show whether cyst is fluid( functional cyst) or it is a solid(tumor). CT scan and MRI could also be done.

Ovarian cyst and its effect on pregnancy:

It is a fact that the ovarian cyst grows even when the woman is pregnant. These cysts are benign and harmless in nature. It is possible to get pregnant even with ovarian cyst.
