There are 2 varieties of jujubes (ilandhai).

One is wild grown (in forests) and other is agriculturally grown. They are called ‘Kattu ilandhai’ and ‘Nattu ilandhai’ in Tamil. ‘Seemai ilandhai’ is a part of the nattu ilandhai.

All fruits contain the same medical benefits. They are partly sweet and sour. Some of the may contain small worms.

Jujube is rich in Vitamins A, B, C. & D. It is also rich in iron. However, it must not be consumed on an empty stomach.

When there is a shortage of the nutrient Calcium, bones tend to weaken leading to quick fractures. Jujube gives strength to the bones and teeth. If bile level increases, it may lead to headache, fainting, giddiness, etc. Jujube (ilandhai) brings bile level under control.

Some people suffer from body-aches frequently. They will tend to tire quickly. This is more common among the people of age above 40 years. Ilandhai fruit is a good remedy for this. Even people who do not have appetite or those who take a long time for digestion of food can take ‘Ilandhai’ fruit as a remedy. They have to remove the seeds in the fruit, mix it with salt & chilli powder, dry it in the sun and take 2 gms during the mornings and evenings. This will ensure improvement in digestion system and also generate good appetite.

Ilandhai is also good in controlling problems encountered during the menstruation period and also control excess blood drain.

As this fruit is rich in Calcium, it controls wear & tear of bones and also compensate for the nutrients lost during the menopause period.
