The Consecration ceremony (Kumbhabishekam) for the most ancient and popular Mylapore Kapaleeswarar Temple was performed here on 28th February around 9 am.

The temple which attracts many devotees and tourists is one of the oldest in Chennai. Mylapore (Thiru Mayilai) got its name after this temple. It is believed that Sri Parvathi Devi worshipped Lord in form a peacock (Mayil) here.

The Raja Gopuram (Main tower) of the temple got damaged by a lightning attack during February 2007. Now the tower has been renovated at a cost of Rs. 12 lakh with new lightning rods installed to protect the Gopuram.

The holy water was poured on the Kalasams atop the Tower at 09.05 am.
