The Real-time Traffic Information System (RTIS) prototype is a technology demonstration project for providing dynamic traffic information on an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) study corridor in South Chennai. This study corridor is 16 km long and includes parts of OMR, Velacherry Tharamani Road, Velacherry Main Road, Velacherry Bypass Road, Sardar Patel Road, Taluk Office Road. This system is a part of the “Advanced Traveler Information System (ATIS) for Indian Cities” project sponsored by Department of Electronic and Information Technology (DeitY), Government of India.

Upon logging in http://rtis.iitm.ac.in  one can get information on alternative routes and travel time by selecting the origin, destination and mode of travel. Maps depicting congestion levels and speed, traffic delay maps at various junctions and roads, live traffic camera and traffic news and alerts are also part of the website.

Traffic flow will be monitored by researchers in the intelligent transportation systems (ITS) lab at IIT-M using GPS devices fixed in 100 MTC buses and live traffic feed from 32 cameras fixed on Sardar Patel Road, IT Corridor, Velacherry Road and Tharamani Road.
