The Tamil Nadu Government`s School Children Dental Health Programme was launched in Saidapet Health Unit District as a pilot project on Tuesday at the Government Higher Secondary School in Pallikaranai near Tambaram.

It was originally started as ‘Kalaignarin Palli Kuzhanthaigal Pal Paathukaappu Thittam by the previous Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam regime. Under this scheme, nearly 10,000 boys and girls in the age group 8-13 (from classes III to VIII) would be covered in 97 government and aided schools in St. Thomas Mount Panchayat Union (or Development Block), that covers the entire southern suburbs of Chennai.

E.Ravichandran, Chief Civil Surgeon, Upgraded Primary Health Centre in Medavakkam, said there were six blocks in Saidapet Health Unit District and St. Thomas Mount Block was selected for implementing this crucial scheme as a pilot project. About 1,500 students would be covered every day and they hoped to cover 10,000 students by the end of this month.
