Rise in vegetable prices continue: poor yield the main reason!

Over the last few days, the prices of vegetable in Chennai have been increasing in a wild manner.
Tomato, which was sold at Rs. 20/- per kg, is now sold at Rs. 65/- per kg. Slightly inferior quality tomato is sold at Rs. 60/- per kg. Onions & potatoes are sold at Rs. 35/- per kg.
The price of beans was Rs. 40/- per kg last week. However, the price of beans has shot up steeply and now, it is sold at Rs. 100/- per kg! Other vegetables like bitter gourd, flat beans, and carrot are also sold at a higher price of Rs. 65/- per kg. Chow-chow & beetroot which were selling at Rs. 20/- per kg, are now sold at Rs. 50/- per kg.
Prices of brinjal have also raised. Depending on the quality, it is sold at Rs. 40/- to Rs. 48/- per kg. Cabbage is the only vegetable available at a relatively cheaper price of Rs. 24/- per kg. Prices of other vegetable remain sky-high!
It is explained that the growth of vegetables in Tamil Nadu was severely affected during the hot summer. Most of the vegetables are transported from other states leading to this price rise.
