90 minutes Sessions: We are not machines!

We are not machines!

While we often imagine ourselves as machines that move linearly we are actually organisms that move cyclically. And to do our most creative, productive work, we need to step to that rhythm.

For over one hundred years researchers have known optimum performance and productivity is achieved when people work in cycles of 90 minutes. Nathaniel Kleitman, Professor Emeritus in physiology at the University of Chicago and regarded as the father of modern sleep research, discovered the basic rest-activity cycle (BRAC) and concluded that 90 minutes of activity followed by a short period of rest enabled people to achieve more.

This is because most peoples’ brains can only focus intensely for 90 to 120 minutes. This is the Ultradian Rhythm that regulates our sleeping and waking lives.

Psychologist, Anders Ericsson, a leading expert on expertise, conducted research along with his colleagues at Florida State University & studied elite performers including musicians, athletes, actors, and chess players. In each of these fields, Dr. Ericsson found that the best performers typically practice in uninterrupted sessions that last no more than 90 minutes. They begin in the morning, take a break between sessions, and rarely work for more than four and a half hours in any given day.

Those who work longer than 90-minute intervals move into a state of physiological fatigue. Note how many times you feel compelled to distraction, checking social media accounts is a good example of a compulsion that we are barely aware of. It can really waste time and distract us completely.

Can you apply this 90 minutes cycle to your routine? If yes, How & What positive outcome you will get by applying?
