Chennai Corporation is set to construct multi-level parking lots at four key locations in the city—C.P. Ramasamy Road in Alwarpet, Pulla Avenue in Shenoy Nagar, Valasaravakkam, and Kodambakkam. This initiative is part of the `iconic projects` aimed at alleviating traffic congestion and will be executed through a public-private partnership.
The civic body has begun gathering traffic data to prepare detailed project reports for these new parking facilities. This step follows increased congestion in many areas due to various infrastructure projects like the Metrorail.
Previously, the Corporation announced feasibility studies for multi-level parking in ten other areas, including Tiruvottiyur, Indira Nagar Third Avenue, NSK Salai, Poonamallee High Road, and Arcot Road. Detailed project reports for some of these locations have already been submitted to the Tamil Nadu Infrastructure Development Board, with revisions underway based on recommendations from the Finance Department.
The construction of the new parking lots is expected to commence after the model code of conduct is lifted in June. Additional parking solutions in other congested areas like Nungambakkam are also being considered.
Parking pricing details are still under discussion, with plans to increase charges due to declining revenue from existing parking lots, such as the one in T. Nagar.
