Passenger traffic at major airports in Tamil Nadu saw a significant rise in August 2024 compared to the same month last year. Chennai Airport recorded a total of 1,853,115 passengers across both terminals, an increase of 90,222 (5.1%) from 1,753,115 in August 2023. Coimbatore Airport welcomed 270,013 passengers, up 16,199 (6.4%), while Tiruchy Airport saw a rise to 168,668 passengers, an increase of 25,564 (17.9%). Thoothukudi Airport reported 19,237 passengers, marking a 2,711 (16.4%) increase.
However, Madurai Airport experienced a decline, with only 108,944 travelers this August, down 5,464 (4.8%) from 114,408 in the previous year. Salem Airport had 10,994 passengers but was not operational during August last year.
Notably, while domestic passenger numbers at Chennai Airport increased, international traffic declined. The international terminal saw 486,177 passengers, down 8,619 (1.8%) from 494,796 in August 2023. Officials attribute this decline to customs delays and issues with inspections, which have prompted many international travelers to choose nearby airports in Bengaluru, Kochi, Hyderabad, or Thiruvananthapuram instead.
