The Tamil Nadu government has assured the High Court that all facilities for differently-abled persons will be provided in the second phase of metro stations in Chennai.

Vaishnavi Jayakumar filed a Public Interest Litigation in the Chennai High Court, seeking an order for ramps in newly constructed metro stations. The case was heard yesterday by Chief Justice R. Mahadevan and Justice Mohammad Shabeek.

Petitioner’s lawyer, Yogeswaran, highlighted that while a 2017 report indicated ramp facilities, only 40 percent were completed by 2020. He emphasized the challenges faced by differently-abled persons in metro stations and trains, especially regarding access from wheelchairs.

Advocate PS Raman, representing the Tamil Nadu government, stated that modifications to current metro stations would affect existing structures. However, he assured that the second phase of metro construction will include all necessary facilities for differently-abled individuals. The judges ordered the government to file a report and adjourned the hearing.
