1000 more TASMAC to get shut in Tamil Nadu

Posted on: 12/Jul/2016 12:47:07 PM
As the next move to prohibition of alcohol in Tamil Nadu, 1000 more TASMAC are set to get shut down. Works to do the same are being carried out by the Taluk officers.

In the past one year, there have been several requests from the people to ban alcohol across Tamil Nadu. During the recent assembly election, all the contesting parties promised complete prohibition of alcohol in their election manifesto. AIADMK announced to achieve the same in stages.

Making the first move, on taking position as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for the sixth time, Jayalalithaa announced the shutdown of 500 TASMAC. She also announced that the TASMAC timing will be postponed to 12 noon from the regular opening time 10 am.

These are already implemented. Now, 1000 TASMAC shops are set to get shut, according to sources from the government. All the Taluk officers are involved in discussions in this regard.

Speaking about this, one off the senior officials working with TASMAC said that they have decided to shut down 1000 TASMAC. A crew headed by Taluk officers is currently collecting statistical data of the TASMAC to be closed. According to the orders of district collectors, each of these crews comprise of Taluk officers, surveyors, and a representative on behalf of the collector.

This crew will visit each and every TASMAC present in every area. The location of TASMAC, surrounding area, presence of temples, schools or bus stand around, etc. are inspected. If there are any, the distance between TASMAC and these places are measured. They also source data about troublesome TASMAC where there are quarrels observed more often.

A report is then sent to the district collector encompassing all these information. This will then get forwarded to the TASMAC head office. Based on this, 100 TASMAC will be closed in the next phase of shutdown. These are likely to get shut in another 2 months.

The opposing parties have claimed that 500 TASMAC that are already shut are done so without considering the income generated out of sales here. It is to be noted that officials are involved in surveying amidst such oppositions by other party members.

The total count of TASMAC which was 6800 is now reduced to 6300. Further, if 1000 more shops get shut, the overall count will get reduced to 5300.
