Chennai Corporation invites EOI from consultants for ITS implementation

The traffic in Chennai is getting worse day by day is known. There are many steps being taken to reduce this traffic in the Chennai city.

The latest news is GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation has invited EOI or Expression of Interest from consultants to make DPR or Detailed Project Report so that ITS or Intelligent Transport System could be implemented soon. This project would bring together both the corporation of Chennai and Chennai Smart City Limited.

Established in the year 2003 with the headquarters in Tokyo, Japan, JICA or Japan International Cooperation Agency coordinates ODA or official development assistance for Japan is known.

It is now revealed that monetary assistance of Rs 500 crores would be provided by this JICA. To implement this above project this JICA has joined hands with the Indian government. As a part of Smart City Mission, ITS project would be implemented.

To meet the demands of traffic that is increasing in the CMA or Chennai Metropolitan Area, Intelligent Transport System would involve design and optimisation of city transport management services, public bus transport systems and traffic management services.

According to an official it is now clear that internal level consultants could express their interest to prepare detailed project report or DPR, bid processing and methods for implementation plus they could also play a role in the supervision of the project.

It is important to note that Intelligent Transport System would provide integration and optimisation of transport and transport management services. Real time monitoring plus control of traffic signals would be carried out by this Intelligent Transport System is known.

Within the time period of 12 months from the date of issue of order, the selected consultant would be ordered to submit reports. It is amazing that as many as 350 junctions in Chennai city would be re-designed in 2 stages. At the MTC head office, Chennai Transport Information Centre would be making its presence felt.

During the phase 1 of the ITS, specified software would be developed so that monitoring and controlling the transportation system could be done. GPS devices would be fitted in all the MTC buses running in the Chennai city and Chennai traffic police headquarters would also have Chennai Traffic Information Centre. As many as 159 locations are present in the core city areas and city peripherals has got 191 locations out of total 350 junctions is known.

The consultant would also have an important role in developing a mobile application so that public participation in the management of city transportation is possible.
