CMRL (Chennai Metro Rail Limited) announced at the middle stages of the Metro Rail construction about connecting some of the pedestrian subways with the particular locations metro stations. This will enable the passengers to walk easily from the roads through the subways leading to the Metro stations.

CMRL reports confirms that three of such areas are finally constructed and connected according to this plan in Chennai namely Saidapet, DMS and Government Estate Metro Stations. Also the recent press release stated the Annasalai Underground connection will be opened for public use within the year’s end.

The Commuters who travel long distance from the city’s outskirts through public buses warmly welcome this method of connecting subways. The Commuters’ efforts to reach the station in the midst of the heavy traffic and confusing road leadings made very easy through these subway connections with Metro Stations.

In Saidapet and DMS metro links the stations will be connected only to one side of the station with pedestrian subways respectively. But Government Estate Metro Station will be connected on both sides of the road with the pedestrian subways confirmed the latest reports from the CMRL.

This scheme is a two-way benefitting, both Commuters making their travel more comfortable in the middle of the busy city traffic and the CMRL constructors enabling them to reduce the space occupied by a metro station without big entry structures. The most important advantage of these connections is that the leading subways are within the close proximity of the MTC Public Bus stands of the respective location, making the transportation inside the Chennai City well connected and organized.

The Anna Salai with the 3.3 km stretch connects with DMS and Saidapet will start the official carriage in the next few weeks. DMS is one of the central hubs of the Chennai Metro track links where the inter-tracking and shift of tracks takes place. The final construction of this crossover shifting zone is finished and after the trial journey it will be opened for the Commuters.

The Saidapet Metro station linked with pedestrian Subway leads to the Little Mount elevated station and was constructed with curved structure of high walls to protect against floods. With these constructions and re-modelling nearing the completion the Highway Department is renovating the subways in Anna Flyover, Thousand lights and Guindy as a part of bringing up the portals similar to other metro stations in the city.

The Nandanam and Teynampet stations have a non-paid area in the ticketing level where Commuters can simply walk to and fro the two sides of the road.
