The new vehicle entering rules of the Chennai Airport can impose extra charges for people hiring a cab for their travel in and out to reach the terminals. A charge of Rs 60 is planned to collect for the taxis entering the airport that may lead to an increase in the cab rates involving the pick-up and drop categories of ride. This rule is only applicable for commercial vehicles and for private vehicles no charge will be collected said the airport authorities.

Also the previous method of charging Rs 110 for the vehicles that were unable to leave the airport within ten minutes of the arrival was ruled out. No more extra charges for the vehicles extending the time period of ten minutes inside the premises of the domestic and international terminals. But the new cab charges may increase the basic fare of the cab rides right away picking money directly from the passengers’ pockets.

This new action was the result of jamming up of cabs inside the airport premises wrongly using the ten minutes free time. Cabs entering the airport premises created lots of traffic confusions disrupting the uniformity of the vehicle pipelines. So the Airport Authority of India (AAI) opted for the new rule of imposing Rs 60 charge for commercial cabs.

G. Chandramouli, the Director of Airport announced on Friday in the press conference about the latest cab charging rule. He also mentioned that the new system will be effective within a month after the work was offered to the concerned contractor. Also AAI is all set to begin the work of constructing two parking lots with a space capacity of 2000 cars.

Airport authorities wanted the new system to encourage vehicles to park with an effective alignment strategies. If the authorities found any of the commercial vehicles creating congestion inside the premises then challan will be issued as a fine. Wheel jammers would be under the action for the violation of traffic rules inside the airport.

Chennai airport charges Rs 50 for first thirty minutes for coaches and buses, Rs 40 for cars and Rs 20 for two wheelers. For the next 120 minutes the charges rise up for different vehicle categories such as Rs 110 for coach buses, SUVs and other buses, Rs 100 for cars and Rs 25 for two wheelers. The above mentioned new rates are inclusive of GST and other taxes.

Bhumi Puja was held on Friday for the project of constructing 2000 cars spacing multi-level parking lots. New departures for international and domestic terminals will be opened for the public use by October end. The terminal can accommodate 400 passengers at a time with 22 check-in counters. Additional immigration counters and boarding gates are constructed in the facility with four baggage scanners. The new integrated terminal will be constructed within 42 months said the airport officials.
