Delay in Koyambedu flyover construction

Posted on: 12/Nov/2018 11:04:08 AM
People taking the route of Jawaharlal Nehru Salai in Koyambedu will have to patiently wait some more months for the vehicles to cross on the midst of heavy traffic congestion. This traffic imbalance is primarily resulted from the delay of flyover construction. The public opening of the flyover is likely to take place only in mid-2019.

Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus which is recently renamed as Puratchi Thalaivar MGR Bus terminus comes as a main junction between Kaliamman Koil Street and Jawaharlal Nehru Salai. Omni bus stand, Koyambedu fruit and vegetable market and MTC terminus are some of the main public centers falling right into the vicinity of Koyambedu flyover construction site. This important hub sees around 15,000 vehicles for every hour.

Transportation starts by 3.00 am from Koyambedu market and also buses from outstations comes to halt at Koyambedu within 8.00 am. Then starts the normal public transportations and pedestrian movements leading to heavy traffic confusion. Contract workers on the site of flyover are unable to work owing to this congestion said the sources of Highway department. The department is connected with the flyover project of Rs 93.5 crore that began in February of 2017.

With large cranes and construction equipment the contract workers cannot take any kind of move as it can lead to jam in the middle of the junction. The contract period is already over and now in the phase of extension. Barricades are in places of important construction but only divided form of approach is possible thus making the overall delay in the completion of the flyover. Sources said the construction of the flyover is in the deck slab placement for a stretch of 1.15 km long flyover. Totally there are 40 deck slabs to be constructed on the stretch forming the primary design of the flyover.

Residents from the locality express their views regarding the uniformity in the construction work with better lighting and planning strategies. A bus stop near State election commission office also falls prey for bad lighting conditions. Vehicular space is much reduced as the result of barricades filling up the two lanes of the road.
