The recent study conducted by IIT Roorkee research group concluded that Tamarind seed protein has essential compounds to cure Chikungunya. The team has applied to obtain patent rights for anti-viral composition in which the treatment in entirely based on Tamarind.

Two professors from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee group found out the medicinal feature of a protein compound in Tamarind seeds. It has anti-viral properties effectively adapted for the medication scheme of Chikungunya. The research group released the research conclusions and patent right application dealt with nature based treatment converted into medicine.

Tamarind is an excellent food used almost every day in South Indian cuisine. It is an ancient form of medicine used for thousands of years for the cure of many rare form of body ailments. Tamarind roots, seeds and leaves were an integral part of Ayurveda medicine for treating infections, nausea and abdominal pain. Now the latest IIT research confirmed the presence of a diverse group of proteins called Lectin in Tamarind seeds. This protein can bind glycan sugars with N-acetyl glucosamine (NAG) that can effectively act as an anti-viral medicine for many ranges of viruses including HIV and HPV. The protein can safeguard the host cells restricting the entry of virus thereby completely curing the infection.

Researchers found out this exclusive protein with the chromatography test confirming the binding of lectin molecules to the glycan inside the viral capsule. This process is called as called Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) that can prevent the virus entering the blood cell stream of the individual.

The study has concluded that Tamarind seed protein can destroy 64 percent of infection acquired through Chikungunya. The levels of RNA will also be reduced up to 45 percent with the lectin binding property. The use of antiviral property of tamarind based lectin with NAG was studied for the first time in IIT that can be remodified completely for blocking the virus entering the cells.

Antiviral drugs and vaccines are not available in market for Chikungunya. At present preventive measures are the only means to manage such infections said one of the researchers of IIT Roorkee group.
