The latest update from Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) informed about the conversion of sodium vapor lamp into LED lamps all over the city is almost nearing the completion. One of the officials from Electrical Department of GCC said the work will be completed within the end of this year.

The conversion process will save approximately Rs 2 Crore per month for the government handling the expenses of electricity for the old sodium vapor lamps. Already a considerable portion of the city’s street lights were converted to LED lamps, 1,85,000 out of 2,77,000 street lights. In most of the places the old lamp post was replaced by Galvanized Iron poles. The conversion work is going on a full swing and all of the street lights will illuminate white light replacing the traditional yellow lamps as soon as possible mentioned the sources of GCC.

The stretch of Mount road and Poonamalle, Secretariat and Airport has been completed already. But the replacement works on the roads of metro points are still pending owing to the final construction phases of the Metro stations. The plan to replace the old lights will be soon revamped within the month of December, 2018.

The project was started in the year 2012 across city with the new LED lamps lit up with the source of solar energy. With the increasing buildings and city expansion the corporation had to install 50,000 more lights in many localities.

Already 60 percent of lights are replaced by LED lamps reducing the overall power expenditure of the corporation by Rs 1.5 crore. Another 50 lakh cut has been expected after the completion of replacement project. LED lamps are more efficient than sodium vapor lamps with additional life of 50,000 hours. Maintenance cost and frequent monitoring is not needed for LED lights that can be more efficient in terms of financial and operational factors.
