The capacity of this desalination plant would be 10 MLD. This upcoming offshore desalination plant would be one of the 5 components of the Rs 65,000 crores Deep Ocean Mission and it would be a technology demonstrator. This was according to Mr. Rajeevan, secretary, ministry of earth sciences. While speaking at the NIOT silver jubilee function, Mr. Rajeevan hinted that by October month formal approval for Deep Ocean Mission would be got and the project would start rolling. In the year 2007, NIOT had set up a plant on experimental basis and submitted DPR including the design to the centre nearly 2 years back but the project did not have any progress.

Information collected is offshore desalination plant in Chennai got a boost with centre announcing a formal launch of the mission in 2 months. For getting potable water, desalination plant would be working on the indigenously developed LTTD or low temperature thermal desalination technology, low cost and environment friendly method.

This was as per Mr. M.A. Atmanand, director of NIOT. It mumust be noted that the difference in the temperature in the seawater at different depths is the principle on which the desalination plant would work.
