Auto fare deadline update

Posted on: 02/Jul/2013 2:46:45 PM
With the Supreme Court deadline of July 6th on setting auto fares fast nearing, there has been no action taken on the ground. Talks between officials and auto drivers have dwindled and no result has come out of it. However, State Transport Authority (STA) officials are still optimistic.

‘We will have one dedicated helpline manned by five people for complaints against erring autorickshaw drivers… On the field, RTOs will coordinate with the traffic police to ensure action is taken immediately if drivers demand excess fare. We have divided the city into six zones. Each zone will have a dedicated squad of two to three people who can get to the spot quickly and question the driver… We will organise counselling sessions with the help of consumer groups and RTO officials. At the sessions we will teach drivers how to behave with customers, the advantages of using meters and do recap of all the rules that autorickshaw drivers are supposed to follow… As of now, the department needs 51 grade I motor vehicles inspectors (MVI) and 24 grade II MVI across the state. They will join the force in the next two months and strengthen enforcement… The authority has also pushed for meters with printers. It will cost only Rs 1,500 extra and make a big difference for the commuters’, said an STA official.
