New Delhi Archaeology Experts Explore Nighttime Access to Mahabalipuram Monuments

Posted on: 02/Jul/2023 10:33:46 AM
In response to repeated requests from tourists, a team of experts from the Department of Archaeology in New Delhi arrived at Mahabalipuram on Saturday to assess the feasibility of keeping the town`s historic monuments open for nighttime visits. The popular tourist destination attracts thousands of visitors who flock to enjoy its various monuments, including Krishna’s Butter Ball, Arjuna’s Penance, Shore Temple, and Five Rathas.

Currently, tourists are allowed to explore these attractions only from 6 am to 6 pm, leaving many visitors disappointed if they cannot make it within the restricted hours. To address this issue and enhance tourists` experiences, the Department of Archaeology is considering extending the visiting hours beyond 6 pm, allowing enthusiasts to enjoy the sites even during the night.

The team of experts inspected the monuments to assess the feasibility of installing adequate electric lights for better visibility during nighttime visits. Additionally, they evaluated the security measures required to ensure the safety and preservation of these precious historical treasures.

In a similar effort to boost tourist footfall in the town, the Mamallapuram lighthouse was opened for free to the public on `World Seafarers Day` last Saturday. In batches of 50, visitors were allowed to climb the lighthouse, enjoy the breathtaking views, and capture memorable pictures near the monument.
