The Integral Coach Factory (ICF) has unveiled its first air-conditioned (AC) suburban train set, marking a significant milestone for the Chennai division of Southern Railway. The 12-car AC rake, stationed at the Anna Nagar shed in Chennai, is set to revolutionize suburban travel in the city with advanced features and enhanced passenger comfort.
Key Features of the AC Train Set
Capacity: The stainless steel-body train can accommodate up to 5,280 passengers.
Advanced Technology: Equipped with fully-suspended traction motors, wheel-mounted disc brakes, and air spring suspension, the train promises a smooth and comfortable ride, akin to the Vande Bharat Express.
Energy Efficiency: The regenerative electro-pneumatic brake system reduces electricity consumption by over 35% compared to conventional electrical multiple units (EMUs).
Safety and Comfort: The train features sealed wider gangways, double-sealed glass windows, and electrically-operated double-leaf automatic sliding doors, similar to those in Metrorail systems, ensuring safe and efficient entry and exit for commuters.
Operational Plans
A senior official from the Chennai division confirmed that the ICF is set to hand over the AC train this month. Preparations for its operational deployment are currently underway. The train is expected to operate on three of the four suburban sections in Chennai:
1. Beach - Tambaram - Chengalpattu
2. MMC - Avadi - Tiruvallur
3. MMC - Athipattu - Gummidipoondi
The Beach - Velachery section, part of the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS), will not accommodate the 12-car AC train due to infrastructure limitations, as it currently supports only nine-car EMUs.
Fare Structure
The fare structure for the AC suburban services has not yet been finalized. Officials are expected to announce the minimum and maximum fares in the coming weeks, following consultations with stakeholders.
A Milestone for Chennai
This AC train set marks a significant upgrade for Chennai’s suburban rail network, offering commuters a modern, energy-efficient, and comfortable travel option. The ICF’s successful manufacturing of this train set further cements its reputation as a leader in rolling stock production in India.
The launch of the AC suburban train is expected to set a new benchmark for urban rail travel in Chennai, aligning with the city’s growing demand for sustainable and efficient public transportation solutions.
