Chennai Egmore-Beach 4th Track Construction Completed; Safety Inspection Soon

The construction of the 4th railway track between Chennai Egmore and Beach is now 100% complete, with a test run by the Commissioner of Railway Safety expected soon, according to railway officials.

Currently, suburban trains operate on two tracks, while express and freight trains use a single track. The lack of an additional track has limited train operations. To address this, the Railway Board approved the 4th track, with construction beginning in August 2023 at a cost of ₹274.20 crore. The project faced delays due to land acquisition but resumed last October, allowing the Beach–Chintadripet train service to restart.

With track laying, signaling, and electrification now completed, Southern Railway’s Principal Chief Electrical Engineer, Somas Kumar, will inspect the line today, followed by a high-speed trial run. Any necessary corrections will be made before final approval.

Railway authorities have advised the public to avoid trespassing on the tracks during the inspection and trial run.
