The news that GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation has started work on upgrading the 24-hour emergency at Shenoy Nagar into 100-bed urban community health centre or UCHC is the talk of the town now.

For the purpose of upgrading the above-said maternity hospital at Rs 8.38 crores, the civic body has called for tenders from potential bidders.

In the recent assembly session, municipal administration minister Mr S.P. Velumani grabbed the attention of many. It must be taken into account that the upgraded facility at Pulla Avenue in Shenoy Nagar was among the announcements made by this minister. After the tender process, finalizing the bidder would take place. Information is after finalizing the bidder the civic body expects the up-gradation to be completed inside 18 months.

Usual primary health care centres or PHC would not have the provisions for minor surgical services, diagnosis facilities for major illness, provision of postnatal, ante-natal care plus others like cancer treatment, gynaecological ailments treatment etc. It is brought out that 100-bed facility would have provisions for all these above mentioned and it would be superb for the patients.

According to a senior official belonging to GCC, it is clear that the idea was to have UCHC with beds and upgraded diagnostic facilities in each of the 15 zones. It is known that the proposed facility at Shenoy Nagar comes under zone 8 (Anna Nagar). It is said that the proposed facility would be highly beneficial for those living in Aminjikarai and in Villivakkam.

As per a roadside eatery owner in Anna Nagar, the proposal was a superb idea and the authorities must execute it well. He highlighted that even for small surgery people have to travel to the government hospital.

It must not be forgotten that a similar 24-hour facility of GCC built at a cost of Rs 9.8 crores in Kannagi Nagar off Rajiv Gandhi Salai was opened in February last. The point here is this hospital was far from functional until 2 months back. The reason was due to lack of medical equipment and laboratory facility. An official belongs to GCC explained about how construction work for 24-hour UCHC in zone 15 (Sholinganallur) and zone 14 (Perungudi) was undertaken. He added that these facilities would also be 100 bedded and would be constructed at a cost of Rs 7 crores.

It is revealed that the civic body would be procuring 31 haemo-dialysis units and these units would be set up in the 24-hour hospital. Patients with kidney ailments would get treated by these units. The official finally threw light on how out of 31 haemo-dialysis units 21 have been sanctioned under National Urban Health Mission and how the rest would be procured through non-governmental organisations.
