Going to the college after completing 12 years of school education doesn’t guarantee that the students could read and write the Tamil language fluently.

The shocking piece of news is a survey was conducted and it has been revealed by the survey that the college students cannot even write in their mother tongue. It is now said that the higher education department has proposed to train the college students in Tamil.

It has been brought out that the college students were unable to frame their thoughts and write even in their mother tongue. Information collected is TN State Council for Higher Education is considering the idea of training the students in the Tamil language. It must be taken into account that colleges and universities have been offering soft skill courses in spoken English, personality development and in handling computers. Many students skip them though they are highly beneficial to them.

An official mentioned about how the training would have to be wholesome and must be conveyed by those interested in teaching skills. He added that soft skills required a different method from classroom teaching. A retired English professor, Mr. Ravichandran agreed with the observation and spoke about how the soft skill was varied, including the capacity to listen, appreciate other points of view by perception. He was of the opinion the language could only be taught by someone who was highly proficient in it.

As per some higher education officials, it is clear that some teachers were not interested but other teachers were willing to teach but they were not the right fit. It is important to mention that TN Skill Development Council offers Rs 250 per hour for every batch of students taught. Point to be noted is the financial component to the teachers is not attractive enough to motivate them.

An official brought out that lack of space has also been creating issues. He explained about how colleges were running in shifts and how teachers do not have enough space to conduct such programs. It is worthy to note that the Tamil content available on the internet is less than 0.1% of the total available content.

The speakers at the Tamil Internet Conference last week mentioned that the Tamil content on the internet would be improved. As many as 6 lakhs people were required to upload the Tamil content to the internet and this was as per the speakers. Importance of having efficient translators was brought out by the minister for Tamil official language Mr. Mafoi Pandiarajan.
