A major milestone in the history of the Indian Railways!!

Come December, India`s first hydrogen train would be launched by Indian Railways.

It is now mentioned by many that this could be a groundbreaking move from the Indian Railways. The reason for this is this move would lead to more environment friendly travel in the future. The hydrogen train would not run on diesel or electricity etc. It is now believed that the Indian Railways is going in the right direction with its aim to become net zero carbon emitter by the year 2030.

How will the hydrogen train be different?

It is learnt that hydrogen powered trains would be first to use water as primary resource for generating power.  This hydrogen train would use hydrogen fuel cells to generate electricity that would be needed for propulsion. It is really superb to note that there would not be any emission in this hydrogen train.

Need for hydrogen train in India:

Diesel based trains would produce lots of air pollution etc is known. Point is that the hydrogen trains would cut down carbon footprint and would eliminate air pollution also due to diesel engines. There would not be any emission of carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, particulate matter etc. This would make hydrogen trains one of the most sustainable forms of transport.

Where would a hydrogen train trial be carried out?

Along the Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana, trail run would be carried out by the Indian Railways and the trial run would be of distance of 90km. In the future, more routes would have hydrogen trains and it includes heritage mountain railways like Darjeeling Himalayan railways, Nilgiri Mountain railway, Kalka-Shimla railway etc.

The hydrogen train could run at a speed of 140kmph and it would provide the passengers a smooth, swift and comfortable journey. In the future, hydrogen trains would be expanded to other parts of India also after the successful trial runs. The amazing piece of information is that by the year 2025 there would be as many as 35 hydrogen trains operating across India.
