A 66-year-old woman from Myanmar, Mrs. San Tint, has been given a new lease on life after a successful liver transplant surgery performed at GEM Hospital in Chennai. Diagnosed with advanced liver disease, including ascites, pedal edema, and jaundice related to Hepatitis C Virus-induced Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCV-HCC), Mrs. San Tint’s condition had reached a terminal stage. However, post the expert care provided by the team at GEM Hospitals, she is now on the road to recovery and is preparing to return to Myanmar, symptom-free.
Mrs. San Tint’s condition had become life-threatening, and without a liver transplant, her prognosis was bleak. But after an in-depth evaluation, the team at GEM Hospitals, led by Dr. Magnus Jayaraj, Senior Consultant & Director of the Institute of Liver Diseases, Liver Transplant & HPB Surgery, and Dr. Karthik Raj M, Senior Consultant & Clinical Lead for Liver Diseases, Transplant & HPB Anesthesia & Critical Care, presented her with a life-saving opportunity: a live donor liver transplant.
Her niece, 32-year-old homemaker Mrs. Ma Chit Su Aye, selflessly volunteered to donate a part of her liver to her aunt. The transplant surgery was meticulously planned and executed, with Mrs. San Tint’s deteriorating health requiring precision and care at every step.
“We are thrilled with the successful outcome of this transplant surgery,” said Dr. Magnus Jayaraj. “Mrs. San Tint’s liver disease had progressed to an advanced stage, and her condition was extremely critical. The decision to proceed with a live donor liver transplant was not taken lightly, but the outcome has been exceptional. We are grateful to Mrs. Ma Chit Su Aye for her courage and selflessness in donating her liver and we’re proud of the way our multidisciplinary team came together to ensure the best possible care for both donor and recipient.”
Mrs. San Tint’s recovery has been nothing short of remarkable. Within just ten days of the surgery, she displayed significant improvement, surpassing expectations. She no longer suffers from the debilitating symptoms that had previously dominated her life.
Dr. P. Senthilnathan, Director, GEM Hospitals said, “Following our motto - ‘Best transplant services at best quality for ALL’, the most cost effective Living Donor Liver Transplantation (LDLT) in Chennai is done at GEM Hospital, especially for International patients at no additional rate increase than that charged to Domestic patients. Given that people from most South-East Asian countries also come from humble backgrounds such as us Indians, we want to offer our World-class services, without any premium.”
“I am incredibly thankful to Dr. Magnus Jayaraj, Dr. Karthik Raj M, and the entire team at GEM Hospitals,” said Mrs. San Tint, visibly emotional. “Their expertise, kindness, and dedication have given me a second chance at life. My heartfelt thanks s also go to my niece, Mrs. Ma Chit Su Aye, for her unwavering support and for being my hero. I look forward to returning home, healthy and free from the constant pain and suffering I endured.”
Dr. Karthik Raj M expressed his satisfaction with the outcome, stating, “The surgery was complex and challenging, but the outcome has been very rewarding. Mrs. San Tint’s speedy recovery is a testament to the careful planning, the skill of the surgeons, and the medical staff’s commitment to excellence. It’s always an honor to help our patients regain their lives.”
