The NE monsoon caused inundation in various localities in Chennai in 2024 is well known to us. The news that has come out now is that GCC would be constructing new storm water drains or SWDs in 4 zones at a cost of Rs 16 crores to prevent water stagnation. This would be highly beneficial for the residents especially during the next monsoon season.
The lack of de-silting and maintenance of SWDs have led to rainwater stagnation and water entering into many houses during the NE monsoon season. Point is that the authorities from GCC have inspected several areas during the monsoon when there was water stagnation. The sewage flow in the existing SWDs was not sufficient and it interrupted free flow of water. This was as per some residents. To identify the causes for inundation in the residential areas, a study was also conducted. This study was based on complaints and inspections etc.
Later, a proposal was made to construct new SWDs in many places in Royapuram or zone 5, Anna Nagar or zone 8, Teynampet or zone 9, Valasaravakkam or zone 11. At a length of 618m for Rs 2.18cr, GCC has planned to build a new SWD on Barathi Road from Woods Road to Fakir Sahib Street in Royapuram. In the same way, 2 SWDs would be built in Teynampet zone stretching 270m and 670m for 1.06cr and 2.47 cr respectively. From Duraipillai Street to Jai Nagar First Main Road, GCC would be spending Rs 2.69 cr.
It is learnt that the present SWD would be demolished and reconstructed in the Valasaravakkam zone at Thiruvalluvar Salai from Kothari Nagar Second Main Road to Nandambakkam Canal. An amount of RS 7.94 cr would be spent on this.
