Soon, the dream of having a close look at the heritage structures in Chennai would become reality for the residents. Now, GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation has opened online bookings for heritage walks on the premises of Ripon Buildings near Central Square for tourists and residents etc.

It is known as Ripon Buildings is a monumental neo-classical masterpiece constructed by Mr. Loganatha Mudaliar and it was opened in the year 1913.

It was mentioned by the GCC Commissioner Mr. J. Kumaragurubaran that the civic body has decided to launch the online booking option for heritage walk in this week.

On certain days of the week, starting from Saturday, 150 persons would be allowed to visit Ripon Buildings. The Victoria Public Hall would also be covered in the heritage walk once the renovation gets completed. Public would also get a chance to visit Council Hall. Point is that historians have been asked to register as guides for the heritage walk and three have registered.

For the past few months based on the request from the organisations, GCC has been permitting heritage walks on the premises of Ripon Buildings etc. Individual residents and tourists could also have a chance to visit Ripon Buildings once the online booking option is launched.

Various details the residents and tourists would be asked to provide for heritage walk are Aadhaar, mobile number and home address etc.

When will heritage walks be allowed?

On Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday from 8am to 9am, heritage walks would be allowed. It is noteworthy that those who visit Ripon Buildings for a heritage walk would learn about the history, architecture and heritage of Ripon Buildings. According to an official it was clear that individuals, families, schools, colleges, organisations etc would be given permission to take part in heritage walks.

It must be recollected that the renovation work at Ripon Buildings began under the tenure of the former CM of Tamil Nadu, Kalaignar M. Karunanidhi using funds from Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission.  There has been a delay in the renovation work of Victoria Public hall in Chennai.
